Derrick Johnson:

Photographer • Coach • Dad • Sports Enthusiast

For Derrick, sports have always been a major part of his life.

A 36-year-old father of five, Derrick grew up playing football, basketball, and baseball and has continued his love for athletics through coaching. Over the years, he has coached both football and basketball, working with his own children as well as young athletes throughout the community. Sports are truly a family affair in the Johnson household, with all five children involved in athletics and his wife coaching at the local high school.

He developed a love for photography at a young age and has always enjoyed capturing moments through a camera. Combining that passion with his lifelong connection to sports eventually inspired the vision behind The Highlight Room.

Derrick created The Highlight Room with one goal in mind: to give young athletes the kind of photography experience that makes them feel like the stars they already are.

Inspired by the bold, dramatic imagery often seen in college and professional athletics, The Highlight Room brings that same energy to youth and high school athletes in the community. (Think dramatic lighting, creative poses, smoke and fog effects, bold edits, and an atmosphere that makes the entire session feel like a showtime!)

More than anything, Derrick wants the experience to be fun! As a father and coach, he knows that every athlete is different. Some walk in ready for the session, while others need a little encouragement to come out of their shell. His experience working with young athletes helps him create a relaxed environment where they can have fun, show their personality, and feel confident in front of the camera.

Because at The Highlight Room, it isn’t just about taking a great picture it’s about giving every athlete their moment!
